Vrusshabha, directed by Kannada filmmaker Nanda Kishore, also stars Samarjit Lankesh, Ragini Dwivedi, Nayan Sarika, among others, is an intergenerational revenge saga

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal’s 4th release of the year, after L2 Empuraan, Thudarum and Hridayapoorvam, is Vrusshabha, a period fantasy action drama, written and directed by Kannada filmmaker Nanda Kishore, better known as the Pogaru maker. A Malayalam-Telugu bilingual, Vrusshabha was meant to be in theatres for Deepavali, with October 16 the chosen date. But with only a week to go, there was no news from the team in terms of the trailer or other promotional material.

OTTplay checked in with Nanda Kishore, who announced that the film had bowed out of the Deepavali race and had, instead, locked November 6 for its release. “There are two many films releasing between October 17 and 21, so we decided to push our film ahead,” he said. But wouldn’t November 6 also be problematic, considering that Ravi Teja’s Mass Jathara is scheduled for October 31? “Not really, there is a week’s gap between the films, and while both are mass entertainer commercial films, Vrusshabha belongs to a different genre and will have its own set of audience,” adds the filmmaker.
The film, meanwhile, has Mohanlal in dual roles, as King Vijayendra Vrusshabha, and a business tycoon Vishwambhara. “The one-line plot of the film is whether or not revenge is possible when bitter rivals are reborn as father and son. Will one of them vanquish the other or does love trump all?” explains Nanda. Young actor Samarjit Lankesh, the son of filmmaker Indrajit Lankesh, who debuted with last year’s Gowri, plays the son.
The film also stars Ragini Dwivedi, Nayan Sarika, Ali, Garuda Ram, Ajay Ravuri, Neha Saxena and Vinay Varma, among others. Music is by Sam CS, while cinematography is by Antony Samson.
