Sundarakanda Review: Nara Rohith's comeback film is a love story that handles age gap with maturity. The film is a dignified take on a delicate subject with Sridevi Vijaykumar's standout performance

Siddhu (Nara Rohith) is a man in his thirties who has no interest in marriage, as he is still stuck in his childhood love. One day, he meets Ira (Vrithi Vaghani) and instantly falls in love with her. He tries hard to woo her and eventually convinces her to marry him. However, the shocking twist comes when he learns that Ira is none other than the daughter of his childhood love, Vaishnavi (Sridevi Vijaykumar). The rest of the story unfolds around how Siddhu deals with this tricky situation and finds a way to settle down in life.

Nara Rohith was once known for doing films with unique stories. He is making a comeback after a long gap and has chosen a story that is new for Telugu cinema. Venkatesh Nimmalapudi has written and directed the film, which explores the age gap in love and how one must handle emotions maturely.
Although the concept evokes memories of Anil Kapoor's Lamhe, the way Venkatesh has narrated the film, incorporating a good dose of comedy, emotions, and a mature ending, makes Sundarakanda quite special.
The two love stories are showcased in the first half and are narrated beautifully. The songs, emotional thread, and the way the family drama moves forward without going over the top are the best parts of the film. The best part of Sundarakanda is the way the delicate topic of falling in love with a mother and daughter is addressed in a very dignified manner.
There is not one scene in the film that makes you uncomfortable, as director Venkatesh keeps things jovial and adds situational comedy. Yet another highlight of the film is the way age-related issues are addressed through the hero. The way Nara Rohith's character takes jokes about his age and still makes you feel that falling in love with a young, college-going girl does not sound odd is handled well.
One of the major plus points of the film is the comedy angle. Satya, the seasoned comedian, brings the house down and cracks you up with his solid comedy. The songs are placed nicely, and they do not disturb the flow of the film.
After a key twist about the hero loving both the mother and daughter is revealed, one gets a feeling of how the second half would be handled. But director Venkatesh manages this part with a lot of maturity. He does not take sides and showcases scenes that justify the perspective of each character.
The way the young heroine confronts the hero about his childhood love, and the way the mother, played by Sridevi, comes to know about the hero adopting her in school, are all showcased in a very practical and dignified manner. The family drama is neat, each character gets due importance, and the film ends on a very idealistic note.
Coming to the performances, Nara Rohith gives a mature performance and suits his character perfectly. He is known for his subtle acting and delivers well in key scenes of the film. Vrithi Vaghani is very good as the young college-going girl and delivers a mature performance.
But it is Sridevi Vijaykumar who walks away with all the glory. Playing a mother at such a young age is not easy, but Sridevi does it so well. Not only does she look beautiful, but she also gets to portray different shades of a protective mother beautifully.
As said earlier, comedian Satya gives a solid performance and evokes hilarious laughs. Sunaina, Abhinav Gomatam, and Naresh Vijaykrishna are good in their respective roles. Vasuki plays the hero’s sister, and her role has been designed quite well.
Leon James has composed the music, and all the songs are quite good. The background score, dialogues, and production design are top-notch. The camerawork is amazing, giving the film a classy look. Director Venkatesh makes an impressive debut and crafts a simple yet fun family drama with amazing moments. He will surely go a long way, as his grip on drama and emotions is quite strong.
On the whole, Sundarakanda is a new-age romantic drama that has good comedy, amazing emotions, and a contemporary take on love. Though the film has a few predictable moments, the manner in which it is narrated with proper entertainment makes the film an enjoyable festive watch this weekend.
