The Asia Cup, the premier tournament for Asian cricketing nations, is among the most fiercely contested cricket events, with neighboring countries competing passionately for glory. The tournament started in 1984 with the ODI format. However, in the 2016 edition, the tournament was turned into a T20 format, and since then, it has been played in the 20-over format.

Most centuries in Asia Cup history

#4 Shoaib Malik | 3

Shoaib Malik, the former Pakistani captain and all-rounder, scored 3 centuries in the Asia Cup history. The right-handed middle-order batter played 21 matches in the tournament, and in 19 innings, he managed to score 907 runs.

Malik’s first ton in the Asia Cup came against Hong Kong in the 2004 edition. He then followed it up with another ton in the same edition against India. His 143 off 127 balls is the fourth-highest score in Asia Cup history.

In the 2008 Asia Cup, Malik scored an unbeaten 125 from 119 balls while opening the batting in Karachi. Malik’s all of three tons in the Asia Cup came in the ODI format.

#3 Kumar Sangakkara | 4

Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara, who is also the fourth-highest run-getter in Asia Cup history has scored 4 tons in the tournament.

The former wicket-keeper batter played 24 games in the Asia Cup and scored 1075, with an incredible average of 48.86. Sangakkara’s three of four tons came in the 2008 edition when he scored 101 against Bangladesh, 112 against Pakistan, and finished with 121 against Bangladesh again.

His fourth ton in the tournament was against India in the 2014 edition, when he smashed 103 in Fatullah. All of Sanga’s tons were in ODI format and came while batting at the Number three position.

#2 Virat Kohli | 5

There is hardly any white-ball batting record where Virat Kohli’s name is not there. The former India captain scored five tons in Asia Cup history and is the only player to have scored Asia Cup centuries in both ODI and T20I formats.

Kohli scored his first Asia Cup ton (108) against Sri Lanka in 2012 in Mirpur and then followed it up with a record 183, the highest score in Asia Cup history, against Pakistan in the same edition in Mirpur.

In 2014, Virat then scored a stunning 136 against Bangladesh in Fatullah, and then scored an unbeaten 122 against Afghanistan in 2022 edition, which is his only T20I ton.

In the 2023 edition, which was again played in ODI format, Kohli smashed an unbeaten 122 from 94 balls against Pakistan in Colombo to mark his fifth ton of the tournament.

#1 Sanath Jayasuriya | 6

During the late 1990s and early 2000s, even before the rise of the T20 format, it was Sanath Jayasuriya who changed the outlook of opening batting with his strokplay.

The dynamic southpaw opener had to skill to hit boundaries at will and score over 100 strike rate even in the ODI format. Sanath, who is the highest run scorer in Asia Cup history, scored the most number of centuries as well (6).

In 25 matches, he scored 1220 runs with a strike rate of 102.52, without playing the T20I format.

His first Asia Cup ton was against Bangladesh (108) in 1997 in Colombo. He then scored 105 against India in the 2000 edition in Dhaka.

Sanath’s third and fourth Asia Cup tons came in the 2004 edition: 107 against Bangladesh and 130 against India, both in Colombo. He then scored his other two tons in the 2008 edition against Bangladesh (130) and India (125) in Karachi.
