The sweet space between books and movies is where many of us find ourselves, especially where adaptations of our favourite books reside. Some adaptations are good, some bad; some miss the essence, while others hit the mark, but we must say it is indeed a very interesting space to be in. Adding to that list is the Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine-starrer The Idea Of You, based on the book of the same name written by Robinne Lee.

After its digital release on Prime Video a couple of days ago, the movie has become the talk of the town, with people still raving about how good it is and how brilliant Anne and Nicholas’s chemistry is. What is also being talked about is the climax. People have loved it and can't get enough of the smile Solène gives at the end before the screen blacks out.

But what if we tell you now that the climax shown in the film The Idea Of You is completely different from the book? And the one in the book is tragic and heartbreaking, unlike the one in the movie, which gives you hope. Creative liberties are always taken in books that are adapted into movies, and the Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine starrer is no different. Read on to learn everything you need to know about the same.

The Climax Of The Idea Of You

After the two decided to exist for five years with the idea of each other, The Idea Of You takes a leap of five years. Izzy, Solène’s daughter, moves to Chicago. Her ex-husband now has no reason to interfere in her life. She still runs the art gallery and remains the same. Hayes is still quite famous. One day, someone comes to meet Solène in the gallery, and she walks out of her office to the main gallery only to find a grown-up Hayes looking at her with the same love he had at the beginning of it all. She looks at him, smiles, and the screen blacks out. The open ending signifies that the two have given each other another chance, and this time the odds are in their favour.

The Climax In The Book

The movie The Idea Of You stays true to its namesake book for most of it. The romance, the falling in love, the tender intimacy, the complexities, the insecurities—everything is captured. However, the makers of the film chose to change the climax to make it more hopeful. After the final breakup chat, Solène realises that she has too many priorities to have Hayes in her life, and knowing that her daughter and the attention her relationship is getting won't go well, she lets him go.

The last pages of the book have Solène lying to Hayes, telling him she doesn't love him and that she just loves the idea of him. Hayes keeps texting her for days to reconsider, and finally gives up and stops. He moves on, but she keeps loving him even after becoming the villain in his eyes.

The Idea Of You is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more information on this and everything else in the world of streaming and films.
