Based on Stacy Schiff’s 2005 award-winning book A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America, the show releases on OTT this summer.

The Apple TV original has also released a trailer on March 13, that offers a fascinating glimpse into the glamorous yet scheming world of 1770s France, America, and England. A refreshing fact about the show is that it is not going to explore Franklin’s life from birth to death. Instead, the show will explore the greatest gamble of his life.

In 1776, an aged but full of lively vigor and charm Franklin must go on a deadly mission unlike ever before. Deadly, because the stakes were as high as the fate of his country, his own life being little compared to it. Due to the ongoing battles with Britain for independence, America was in a dire state and needed help from France to tip the scales in their favor. Now, at the age of 70, Benjamin Franklin embarks on a secret trip to France with his grandson Temple.
The trailer features amusing as well as tautly thrilling moments wrought with betrayal, deceit, lust, politics, British spies, French informers, hostile colleagues, and multiple attempts on the Franklins’ lives. But Benjamin is not so easily deterred, he has more love and vigor for his country than his lust for life. With no formal diplomatic training, armed only with charm, intelligence, street smartness, and ingenuity, Benjamin ventures forth without looking back.
And it is Benjamin’s chutzpah, bravery, and brainpower that engineers the Franco-American alliance as well as the peace treaty with Great Britain in 1783. It is ironic how a rich, old nation with little reason to associate with a stumbling new fledgling country is convinced into it solely by the bulldog tenacity of an ever patient, humorous and patriotic Benjamin Franklin, whom most remember for his scientific contributions.
