It's been more than two decades, Salma Hayek was seen in Frida Kahlo’s character. It was one of the most celebrated films of the year. Despite several ups and downs filled with nasty comments, the Mexican-American actress successfully pulled out the character, and impressed a large amount of audiences. The film was made to bring the story of Frida Kahlo, the famous Mexican painter's life into light. Although Frida's paintings are still considered iconic, back in the 1930s and 1940s, she was terribly criticised for her looks.

Where to watch Frida

Frida Kahlo was mostly criticised as ‘the ugliest woman’. Her paintings and art actually tell the story of Kahlo’s life. Despite struggling with health conditions and mental issues, Kahlo’s art amazed everyone. Hence, Amazon Prime Video is now bringing the painter's life story in one documentary, Frida, which will be released on March 14, 2024.

About Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo’s paintings like ‘The Two Fridas’ and ‘Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird’, showcase her unique style and explore themes of identity, pain, and resilience. Born in 1907, Frida’s father was German, while her Mexican mother was a Spanish native. This mixed ancestry was often seen in her portraits, mostly the colonial European and Mexican side.

Kahlo had suffered with polio, which made her left side number and she had to suffer this ailment throughout her life. Frida got her inspiration from her father, as he was a professional photographer. In 1922 she entered the National Preparatory School in Mexico City with an interest in eventually studying medicine, but later she became interested in paintings. In 1925, Kahlo met with a dangerous bus accident, which made her undergo almost 30 operations throughout her life.

Later in 1929, she got married to her lover Diego Rivera, and began wearing traditional Tehuana attire, which had become her trademark. The costume consists of a loose blouse, paired with lots of gold jewellery, beautiful floral headdress, and a long skirt. Later her husband Diego Rivera indulged in several extra-marital affairs, including Frida's sister. This was one of the most shocking parts in Frida Kahlo’s life. However, again in 1940, Frida and Diego reconciled, and got back together.

Throughout this suffocating painful life, Frida painted numerous remarkable portraits, which later became one of the most iconic arts in the world. Amazon Prime Video is bringing Frida Kahlo’s life throughout animation, archive footage, and snippets from the painter's personal write ups. Prime Video’s Frida is the first ever documentary that has been made. In Salma Hayek’s Firda, Alfred Molina played the role of Diego Rivera, who is famous for Spider-Man’s villain Doctor Octopus.
