The Italian Open 2024 will draw to a close this weekend. The clay court Masters tournament that’s largely seen as practice before the next Grand Slam event – the French Open, is at semi-final stage already. While the 4 women in the semis have been determined – Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Aryna Sabalenka and Danielle Collins – in the men’s draw, only two have sealed semis spots, with two others heading into their quarterfinal matches today (May 16)
Alejandro Tabilo vs Alexander Zverev: May 17, 2024, 7 pm
On May 15, in the first quarter-final match, Alejandro Tabilo defeated Zhizhen Zhang in in straight sets (6-3 6-4) to be the first men’s singles semi-finalist. This was only their second encounter and first on clay, with Zhang having won the earlier match – a qualifier at 2021 Wimbledon.

Later in the day (early hours of May 16 in India), Alexander Zverev ended Taylor Frtiz’ journey in the Italian Open in straight sets – 6-4 6-3. Going into this match, Zverev had a meagre 4-3 head-to-head encounter lead, which he has now extended. Zverev will play Tabilo in the first semi-final on March 17. The duo has not played each other before, but Zverev, who won the tournament in 2017, beating Novak Djokovic, is the hot favourite to proceed to the final on May 19.

Tommy Paul vs Nicolas Jarry: May 18, 2024, 12 am
In the men’s singles event, two quarter-finals will be held on May 16 at the Centre Court. At 4.30 pm (IST), Hubert Hurkacz will take on Tommy Paul, while Stefanos Tsitsipas and Nicolas Jarry are set for 10.30 pm.
Hurkacz and Paul have played each other twice before, and are split evenly in the head-to-head encounters. In Rome, though, Hurkacz is the one that everyone’s betting on to move to the round of 4, even though it was Paul who prevented Daniil Medvedev from defending his title . In a three-set well-fought match, Paul persevered and sent Hurkacz packing.
Nicolas Jarry leads the head-to-head encounters against Stefanos Tsitsipas 3-2. Both have been in good form in the season and are pretty evenly poised as they get set for their Italian Open quarter-final match at 10.30 pm.
