Like Flowers in Sand Episode 5 Review – Secrets get darker with bitter truths clouding Ssireum

The latest fifth episode of ‘Like Flowers in Sand’ premiered on Netflix with added plot twists and a cliffhanger storyline. Kim Jin-woo, as the director, brings a stellar cast, with Jang Dong-yoon and Yoon Jong-seok in leading roles. The sports drama also featured Kim Bo-ra, Lee Jae-joon, and others in leading roles.

Like Flowers in Sand delves into the prominence of Ssireum traditional sports (Korean wrestling), where the wrestlers battle each other on sand for the coveted championship game titles. It revolves around the community of Geosan, where mysterious events bring uncertainty to the townspeople.

The fifth episode of this 12-episodic drama unfolds with a childhood flashback that finally reveals a part of the reason why Du-sik's family had to leave the town hastily. Du-sik's father was accused of match fixing, which brought a lot of mud to his name and fame. It also follows the narrative of mysteries and plot twists when the townspeople of Geosan’s Ssireum get to know that the ex-coach is not just missing but dead. 

During a sports team reunion after Jin-su joined as a coach and Baek-du finally made his call to return to sports, the teammates confessed that they left millions of won to their coach. Baek-du's change of heart also became a hot topic of discussion in the small town. One of the key moments lies in the short trip when Baek-du and Dong-sik team up to investigate Lim Dong-seok after his transfer to the Seongwan City Hall Team. The episode culminates when Baek-du reveals that his return’s major reason was Du-sik. This confession is surely going to fill the audiences’ hearts with butterflies dancing in their stomachs as they wait for Thursday’s episode.

The new episode delves into the depths of various kinds of relationships, from friendship to family bonds and romantic feelings being exchanged verbally and non-verbally.

It also hints at the friendship mends on the cards when Jin-su's mother has a heart-to-heart talk to renew their childhood bonds and friendship. The character development is significant as per the upcoming episodes, as more secrets are revealed and Baek-du’s kindness gets noticed by his childhood crush and best friend Du-sik. The intertwined mysteries are unfolding at a consistent pace and pique interest among the viewers.

This is by far one of the best episodes, as it clears the hazy secrets with prominent childhood flashbacks, a spotlight on the possible friendship reunion, and the romance that might blossom in the upcoming episodes. Overall, it set the tone perfectly for the new episodes and also brought a heartfelt smile to viewers’ faces when Baek-do and Do-sik had their moments.
