Priscilla movie has not a single song of Elvis Presley; musician Thomas Mars says they did not get anything

Priscilla is the movie about Priscilla Presley, the ex-wife of Elvis Presley, who met the king of rock 'n' roll at a party. It tells the story about Elvis, who used to become someone entirely unexpected in private moments: a thrilling crush, an ally in loneliness, and a gentle best friend.

The movie premiered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival on September 4. It was released in the US by A24 in limited theatres on October 27, before expanding wide on November 3. Priscilla is directed by Oscar-winning Sofia Coppola.

Today Priscilla music supervisor Randall Poster and Thomas Mars, who worked on the movie's music, opened up about its music. Did you know they wanted to use Elvis Presley's music in it, but did not get anything in their hand?

What did Randall Poster share?

“To immediately be out of period was very exciting." Poster shared, “So much of the music that we landed on was born out of Sofia’s instincts, and some songs were particularly important to Priscilla herself that we learned about from the memoir or from Sofia’s conversations that she had with Priscilla.” Randall Poster has given stellar works this year in movies like – Killer of The Flower Moon, Asteroid City and Hit Man.

On the other hand, Thomas shared something very disappointing about the songs. Thomas Mars is the lead vocalist of the indie-pop band, Phoenix. For the unversed, he is also Sofia Coppola's husband.

What did Thomas Mars share?

Thomas and Randall have worked together on Priscilla's music. Mars shared that at first, they expected to have some of Elvis’ music, but they didn’t get anything, “Ultimately, I think it’s better, but it was very stressful for a certain time. Jacob looks incredibly convincing and he’s very handsome, so it’s very easy to realise why Priscilla is doing this, but Elvis was such a great performer and musician that without his music bringing some of that romanticism to the movie, it was a challenge. You know, it’s their legacy, it’s their business. So they’re probably very protective.”

Thomas declared that even after being a musician, he was not much familiar with the king of rock 'n' roll's music. Later while working on the movie, he found himself enamoured with Elvis. He shared that he wanted to use the songs – Always on My Mind, Are You Lonesome Tonight?, Memphis Tennessee, Heartbreak Hotel, Hound Dog, Love Me Tender and Suspicious Minds, in the movie.

“For about six months, when Sofia was writing, we played a lot of Elvis songs in the house,” Mars shared. “I knew a few, but I didn’t know a lot of them. It was hard, because I started falling in love with all these songs, and then all of a sudden we can’t use them.”
