It is interesting to see the world of Spider-Man growing in branches that one couldn't even imagine a decade ago. There is a Marvel wing; Sony is actively working with Marvel; Sony also has their personal Spidey universe; and if that was any less, now Amazon has also entered the game with MGM+. The studio is a big player in the world of digital and streaming. It was in 2022 when the studio announced its foray into creating content from the Spider-Man universe. Their first show that was announced was a niche spinoff titled Silk: Spider Society. Nothing about the IP has been given out ever since. There was not even an update in the rumour realm, and everyone was confused as to what was happening with the show. It turns out that Silk has now been cancelled by the studio and is not moving forward.

Yes, you read that right. The latest update brings sad news about the very first show Amazon ever announced in their attempt to bring the world of Spider-Man to their realm. This news comes exactly in the same week as the studio confirmed that they will be making the Spider-Man Noir show with Nicolas Cage titled Noir. The fans were even then confused about the whereabouts of Silk: Spider Society. But we finally know it isn't happening. Read on to learn everything you should know about this shocking update of the week.

What Was Silk: Spider Society About?

Silk is a character from the Marvel comics who sits in the Spider-Man universe. She is addressed as Silk and her real name is Cindy Moon. Often called Spider-Woman, she is a Korean-American woman who is bitten by the same radioactive spider that gave Peter Parker his powers. She went on to become a member of the Spider-Army, Web Warriors, and Agents of Atlas. Not sure what part of her life the makers of the scrapped Amazon show were planning to focus on, but mostly for a character entering the live-action world ever, it could have been her origin story. But now, as the show is cancelled, we might never know the approach the makers had at all.

But Why Did Amazon Cancel Silk: Spider Society?

There is no concrete reason behind the cancellation that is known to anyone outside the Amazon studio's office right now. But it is being said that creative differences are the reason behind Silk: Spider Society falling off. It is said that the show did not get on track at all after the Writers Guild of America 2023 strike ended, and that raised many eyebrows. Angela Kang, who was the showrunner of the show, as per Deadline, was given notes to reconfigure the show.

That is not it; the higher-ups didn't want Angela and her team to hang so heavily on the central character. While last year it was said that the show was still on track, the chances of it getting made still depended on the script. The project has already gone through three iterations. The latest pitch that Angela Kang offered was well received. But the final decision came in favour of going ahead with Nicolas Cage's Noir and not Silk: Spider Society. Angela continues to be with Amazon and MGM+ as part of her deal.

Only time will tell if Amazon will ever think of reviving the project or not. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more information on this and everything else in the world of streaming and films.
