With Jana Nayagan postponed over censor delays and Parasakthi facing uncertainty, Tamil Nadu theatres stare at unexpected dry spell, turning January into a tough period after a dull December

Jana Nayagan, the much-anticipated Tamil cinema starring Vijay, was expected to be the big ticket opening for Tamil cinema in 2026, following a dry period of December in which theatres experienced a lull phase. After scheduled releases like Karthi’s Vaa Vaathiyaar, Pradeep Ranganathan-starrer Love Insurance Kompany (LIK) failed to hit theatres in December, Tamil cinema fans and theatre owners were pinning hopes on Jana Nayagan, given it is Vijay’s last film before retiring from cinema. But with the censor delays, Jana Nayagan too has been postponed by the makers. Now, with the Parasakthi release (due on January 10), also in troubled waters, Tamil Nadu theatres are haunted by unexpected delays, leading to a dry phase.

In December, two major films, Karthi-starrer Vaa Vaathiyaar and Pradeep Ranganathan’s LIK, failed to hit theatres on the given days due to financial and other issues. This had caused a major dry run for theatres in Tamil Nadu. While hopes were pinned for January Pongal releases, with major films like Jana Nayagan and Parasakthi scheduled, the last-minute postponement of the Vijay film has become a huge blow to theatres. Due to the non-clearance of censor formalities, the makers of Jana Nayagan had announced a postponement from the January 9 release date. On the other hand, Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi, which is slated for January 10 release, is also facing censor issues with the certificate yet to be issued.
Speaking to OTTplay, Tamil Nadu theatre owners association President Tirupur Subramanian said, “There are no big artiste films for Pongal, and with Parasakthi, we have not yet gotten certificate. Since December, theatres have not witnessed any big runs, while Sirai had a decent run. It’s been a dull phase for theatres. Even though Sirai had run well, it won’t come on par with big-ticket star films like Jana Nayagan. December and January so far are tough months for Tamil Nadu theatre owners.”
When asked about Parasakthi, Tirupur Subramanian said that the censor certificate is yet to be issued and had to be latest by Friday, January 9, for the Sivakarthikeyan film to have a smooth release. “Had two films come for Pongal, we could have managed, but let’s see. Even in Telugu, a bunch of films are coming together, while here in Tamil, we don’t have any films. So if Parasakthi comes on time, it can give some respite for a couple of weeks,” he added.
