Jake Schreier helms the film, which features an ensemble cast of antiheroes compelled to collaborate, with screenplay credits going to Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo. Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), David Harbour (Red Guardian), Hannah John-Kamen (Ghost), Olga Kurylenko (Taskmaster), and Wyatt Russell (John Walker) lead the team, alongside Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. The cast also includes Lewis Pullman, Geraldine Viswanathan, Chris Bauer, Wendell Pierce, and Olga Kurylenko.
A group of disillusioned individuals, set up by Valentina, find themselves entangled in a deadly trap. A high-stakes assignment and facing their pasts are necessities for their survival. The film explores this dysfunctional group's ability to transcend their differences or crumble under duress.

While promoting the film, the inclusion of an asterisk in the title became a hot topic. When the Thunderbolts* are renamed the New Avengers in the film's final minutes, this becomes clear. Interestingly, The New Avengers takes its place in the closing credits and in promotional materials released after the film's release, alluding to the path the MCU is taking in the future.
The worldwide box office for Thunderbolts* was disappointing, although the film was one of the most talked-about Marvel Cinematic Universe releases of the year. Worldwide earnings for the film came to $382.4 million as of July 31, 2025, with $190.3 million coming from the US and Canada and $192.2 million from foreign markets. According to industry estimates, the film failed to hit its break-even point of $425 million.
In response to the lacklustre box office take, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige said that viewers were confused and thought they needed to see the MCU Disney+ series to appreciate the film. He said the studio could have better communicated that Thunderbolts* was available to those who hadn't seen every streaming series.
Thunderbolts* has another chance to reach more people in India, maybe even those who didn't see the film in theatres, thanks to its JioHotstar (OTTplay Premium) streaming premiere.
