Dharma movies, amid the pandemic, took a hard turn and decided to tell the stories of war heroes. While they already had Meghna Gulzar’s stellar Raazi starring Alia Bhatt in their kitty, they decided to expand the wing. Came in Shershah, the story of Captain Vikram Batra and his valor. There was also Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl starring Janhvi Kapoor and Pankaj Tripathi in leading roles. Seems like the fan frenzy that follows projects like these, and if made well, the appreciation that comes, the production house is now bringing more of these for us. The newest addition is Ae Watan Mere Watan starring Sara Ali Khan that will release on Amazon Prime Video this month.

Ae Watan Mere Watan Trailer Review

Ae Watan Mere Watan has been in the headlines for a while now, and it is finally gearing up for release. The makers, after an announcement teaser last week, have shared the trailer of one of their most anticipated movies today. Starring Sara Ali Khan as Usha Mehta, Emraan Hashmi as Ram Manohar Lohia, Sparsh Srivastava as an undisclosed character, and an ensemble, the movie is directed by Kannan Iyer and written by Iyer with Darab Farooqui. The trailer that dropped today features all of the above and some more.

Movies about people who fought for our independence always have a soft corner even before we have bought that ticket. So when a filmmaker chooses to tell a story as niche as that of Usha Mehta, we are already invested. Mehta fought the battle for independence in a way no one could think of. A hard-core Gandhian, she started the Congress Radio, which went on to be called the Secret Congress Radio. Even with resistance from British rule and the risk of life, Usha did not stop working towards her cause and was firm on her demand for freedom. It is a story of a time that is celebrated for massive heroes who shined, but here is a hero whose voice alarmed and educated many.

The trailer of Ae Watan Mere Watan takes us through this very story and the life of Usha Mehta. We meet a young girl who has the fire to seek independence in her eyes as she is surrounded by the British. She runs with the tricolor even when there is an attack happening around her. The trailer is an interesting sneak peek into this world for the fact that it highlights every good thing that the movie has. The smart move to include the elements that the audience expects a project releasing on OTT to have works in favor of the trailer. It brings to you a very close to authentic period setup, the sets are believable, and there are good actors in front of the camera.

While Sara Ali Khan is still in the process of reaching something close to perfection, she needs padding around her that manages to elevate her performance. Kannan Iyer in his casting for Ae Watan Mere Watan has kept that in mind as he places Sparsh Srivastava besides her and they together make for a good team. It feels so good to see Sparsh owning projects after his brilliant work in Jamtara and the subtle but such fine performance in the latest release Laapataa Ladies. There is also a hint of Emraan Hashmi, and you will have to probably rewatch the trailer to spot him. But when you do, you will realize why the makers have kept him so hidden.

What also sounds very interesting is the background music of the trailer, and it will be so good if it stays consistent throughout the movie. It suits the era, the tension, and the all-over vibe that the filmmakers want to create. The costume design looks impressive, and so does the world. But one thing that stands on a blurred line is the melodrama quotient that, in multiple points, goes on the extra side.

But then, we are yet to watch the complete film. Let’s be the judges then. Ae Watan Mere Watan will release on Amazon Prime Video on March 21, 2024. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more information on this and everything else from the world of streaming and films.
