Warner Bros unveiled the first look of Margot Robbie as Barbie from the highly-anticipated live-action movie, during CinemaCon at Las Vegas on April 26.
Robbie seems like the perfect person to have played the blonde girl-next-door doll figure that most of us have had during our childhoods. She flashes a big smile at the camera which has captured her sitting in a hot pink convertible and wearing a blue polka dot hairband.
Warner Bros tweeted the first look and release date as well:
Besides Robbie, the movie stars Ryan Gosling as her boyfriend Ken. Other cast members are Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, And Just Like That actor Hari Nef and Will Ferrell.
Greta Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach have co-written the screenplay while Gerwig is will direct. Judging by the past projects that the two filmmakers have brought to the audience, this live-action adaptation won't be a straightforward story but something with an edge.
Production of the reimagining of Barbie's world, backed by Warner Bros and Mattel Films, is currently underway, states Variety.
Robbie is producing via her banner LuckyChap along with Tom Ackerley. Mattel's Robbie Brenner and David Heyman (Harry Potter series, Paddington) are also producers.
At the CinemaCon, Warner Bros also announced that the movie will hit US cinemas on July 21, 2023. An international release date announcement should be expected sometime soon.
Variety mentions that Barbie is among the many live-action projects that are in the pipeline at Mattel Films alongside movies on Hot Wheels, Masters of the Universe, Polly Pocket, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, and dolls Chatty Cathy and Betsy Wetsy.
Besides this major update on the Barbie movie, Warner Bros also announced The Batman 2 with Robert Pattinson and director Matt Reeves at Cinema Con.
