Malayalam actress Asha Sharath, who is awaiting the release of her movie Ashakal Aayiram, is especially noted for her performance as IG Geetha Prabhakar in Drishyam films, starring Mohanlal. But was Asha Sharath set to play the role that went to Shobana in Mohanlal’s 2025 hit film Thudarum? The Ashakal Aayiram actress sets the record straight in a recent interview with the YouTube channel Originals.

Was Asha Sharath cast in Mohanlal’s Thudarum?

Thudarum is a 2025 Malayalam film, starring Mohanlal as Benz Shanmugham with actress Shobana as his wife Lalitha. Clarifying whether she was ever part of the film, Asha Sharath said that she was initially involved with another project, Benz Vasu.

“Initially, there was the film called Benz Vasu. The script of that film changed and evolved to become Thudarum. Then the director and hero were all different. At that time, I was the female lead. When I was hearing the story, (director-actor) Lal of Siddique Lal was the hero,” she recounted. The noted actress further explained that this happened years ago after the release of Drishyam.

“Then it later went to Lalettan (Mohanlal). The script and the characters all changed. After the current director and production came on board, I was not approached,” she explained.

Tharun Moorthy directed Thudarum, which had the working title of L360. The film was a blockbuster hit, and one of the highlights of Thudarum was the return of Mohanlal-Shobana as an onscreen pair. Tharun Moorthy is also directing Mohanlal's new movie, L366.

Earlier, there were reports that Benz Vasu was to be helmed by G Prajith. Incidentally, Prajith is the director of Ashakal Aayiram, which stars actors Jayaram and Kalidas, along with Asha Sharath and Ishaani Krishna. Prajith is best known for his directorial debut Oru Vadakkan Selfie, starring Nivin Pauly and Aju Varghese.

When will Ashakal Aayiram release

Ashakal Aayiram will release in theatres on February 6, 2026, along with actress Bhavana’s movie Anomie. Another Malayalam film, Aashaan, featuring Indrans in the lead, released on February 5.
