Kathanar: Akhil Sathyan ‘mind blown’ after watching trailer of Jayasurya film, ‘unlike anything Malayalam cinema has ever seen’

Malayalam actor Jayasurya did not have any releases in 2025, but has two major films coming up, including Aadu 3 and Kathanar. Though Aadu 3 has locked its March 2026 release date, Kathanar seems to be cloaked in mystery with not much details revealed. However, director Akhil Sathyan, who helmed the recent hit film Sarvam Maya, has caught a glimpse of Kathanar and is lavishing praise on the trailer, saying it is ‘unlike anything Malayalam cinema has ever seen’.

What did Sarvam Maya director say about Kathanar trailer

The upcoming Malayalam film Kathanar – The Wild Sorcerer stars Jayasurya in the lead role of a renowned priest, Kadamattathu Kathanar, from erstwhile Kerala. While the cast and crew have been tightlipped about Kathanar, director Akhil Sathyan revealed on social media that he has watched the trailer of the period fantasy thriller.

“Happened to watch the trailer of #Kathanar and it’s unlike anything Malayalam cinema has ever seen. Absolutely mind blowing !!,” the Sarvam Maya director penned on Facebook.

He was also all praise for the crew, including director Rojin Thomasa and cinematographer Neil D'Cunha.

“You all have pushed Malayalam cinema to heights we never imagined,” added Akhil, who is the son of the veteran Sathyan Ankthikad.

What is Kathanar about

The movie Kathanar, billed as a period fantasy thriller, depicts the life of Kadamattathu Kathanar, who is said to have magical powers. A glimpse from Kathanar was shared almost two years ago. Akhil’s statements do confirm that the trailer is ready, and the makers are expected to release without further delay. Popular south actress Anushka Shetty makes her Malayalam debut with the Jayasurya-starrer, which also stars Prabhu Deva. Rojin Thomas has helmed the film.

Meanwhile, director Akhil Sathyan is hogging much attention these days after his latest film, Sarvam Maya, with actor Nivin Pauly became a blockbuster success. Akhil has also penned the fun entertainer, which stars actress Riya Shibu.
